What APR Means for Custody and Parenting Rights

As outlined by the Colorado Judicial Branch in the resource “Custody is known as Allocation of Parental Responsibilities within the Court system,” Colorado does not use the term “custody” in the traditional sense. Instead, it uses Allocation of Parental Responsibilities (APR) to define the legal framework for parenting rights. This process focuses on two core elements: parenting time and decision-making responsibility.

Parenting time determines how time with the child is divided between the parties—essentially, who sees the child and when. Decision-making responsibility grants one or both parents the authority to make major decisions regarding the child’s health, education, and religious upbringing.
