Voters in CA and CO Protect Same-Sex Marriage Rights

As reported by NPR in the article “California and Colorado Voters Protect Same-Sex Marriage,” voters in California and Colorado have taken decisive action to protect marriage equality by approving constitutional amendments that reinforce the right of same-sex couples to marry. These moves come amid rising national concern about the durability of Obergefell v. Hodges, the 2015 U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.

In California, voters passed Proposition 3, which repeals language added to the state constitution in 2008 by Proposition 8, a now-defunct measure that had defined marriage as a union between one man and one woman. Proposition 3 not only removes outdated language, but also enshrines marriage equality into state law.
