Understanding Colorado’s Child Custody Laws

As outlined by FindLaw in the article “Colorado Child Custody Laws,” the state of Colorado replaced traditional custody terminology in 1999 with more modern terms such as “parental responsibilities” and “parenting time.” These legal terms reflect a broader focus on the child’s well-being and shared parental involvement, rather than designating one parent as “custodial.”

Instead of “joint custody” or “sole custody,” Colorado law recognizes joint or primary parental responsibility, including both decision-making and residential responsibilities. Key elements of parental responsibilities include where the child lives, how major life decisions are made, and how much parenting time each parent receives. These responsibilities may also extend to grandparents in certain cases.
