As reported by 9NEWS in their article “A fight for marriage equality: The story behind the first same-sex civil union in Colorado”, Anna and Fran Simon’s relationship became a powerful symbol in the state’s path toward marriage equality. Their home is filled with photos and scrapbooks capturing milestones in a love story they once believed could never be legally recognized.
The Simons’ journey began long before legal recognition was possible. After moving from California to Colorado, they celebrated their union with a wedding ceremony at the Denver Botanic Gardens in 2005. Despite the joyous occasion, their rabbi could only pronounce the union “valid and binding,” not “legal and binding,” a poignant reminder of the legal limitations they faced at the time.
