As reported by KDVR in the article “Colorado House passes bill removing same-sex marriage ban from state statute,” state lawmakers have taken another major step toward codifying marriage equality into Colorado law. On Tuesday, the Colorado House passed SB25-014—also known as the Protecting the Freedom to Marry bill—bringing the state’s statutory law into alignment with its constitution and the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2015 ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges.
The legislation repeals outdated statutory language that defined marriage solely as a union between a man and a woman—a clause that has been unenforceable for years but remained on the books. Voters already removed the same language from Colorado’s constitution last November, and SB25-014 ensures that both legal texts reflect that change.
