Colorado Moves to Remove Same-Sex Marriage Ban

As reported by Colorado Newsline in the article “Bill to Remove Same-Sex Marriage Ban in Colorado Statute Passes Senate Committee,” state lawmakers are moving forward with efforts to formally eliminate outdated language banning same-sex marriage from Colorado’s state statutes. Senate Bill 25-14 passed the Senate State, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee with a 3-2 vote and now heads to the full Senate for consideration.

While same-sex marriage has been legally protected nationwide since the 2015 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, Colorado’s existing statutes still contain language recognizing only marriages between “one man and one woman.” Although the statute is legally unenforceable, lawmakers are pushing for clarity and alignment with both current law and public sentiment.
