As reported by LGBTQ Nation in their article “Out Colorado governor repeals state’s same-sex marriage ban: ‘Colorado is for everyone’”, Governor Jared Polis has signed legislation officially removing the state’s outdated ban on same-sex marriage. While the ban has been unenforceable since the 2015 Supreme Court ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, concerns following the overturning of Roe v. Wade prompted lawmakers to take extra steps to safeguard marriage equality.
Governor Polis emphasized that Colorado stands for inclusivity: “Colorado is for everyone, no matter who you are or who you love.” He noted that voters had already removed discriminatory constitutional language in November, and this legislation ensures that LGBTQ+ couples will continue to have their marriages recognized, even if federal protections are ever rolled back.
